about

'Take me home to Castlebar, they'll send me home to die'

Castlebar is about the emigrants' yearning to return home to Ireland which remains strong even as their grip on life weakens.
For many, they never make it unless in a casket or urn. Castlebar is also a nod to the mighty Mayo, opponents in many a great Connaught final tussle with our own Roscommon.

It's also written in memory of our great friend who would spend his summers in Castlebar and the rest of his time raising merry hell in Acton Town...

To Kieran - who left us too soon.

lyrics

'What have you done?' St Peter said, 'To gain admission here?'
'I've worked at Whipps Cross Hospital for many and many a year.'
'Come in, come in!' St Peter said and quickly rang the bell
'Come in my dear and take your seat, you've had your share of hell!'

Take me home to Castlebar, they'll send me home to die
Take me home to Castlebar, it's there I wanna lie
Although the sun is shining and the birds they sing so sweet
Take me home to Castlebar, it's there my friend we'll meet

I was sent to Camden Town, when I was just a boy
I drank my weight in misery but I drank my weight in joy
And now my life is fading fast and soon I'll turn to dust
So take me home to Castlebar, in you my friend I trust
